The line opened in 1905 as the ‘Piesberg –
Rheine Light Railway’ with a gauge of
1000mm.In 1935 the track was relaid to
standard gauge (1435mm) and was renamed the
‘Tecklenburger Nordbahn AG’ (TN). Then, in
1960, it became the ‘Verkehrsbetriebe Kreis
Tecklenburg’. Passenger traffic ceased in
1967 but freight is still carried today,
hauled by diesel locomotives. Since 1980
the railway has belonged to Regionalverkehr
Münsterland (RVM).In the mid-1990s traffic
was limited to serving the German army
stores on the canal wharf, the Karmann firm
in Rheine and various factory sidings in
Uffeln. The Altenrheine service has
ceased. Here the transfer siding to DB was
altered in 1989 so that direct access in the
Spelle direction to Agl Karmann is
possible. Also in 1989 the Eversburg layout
was altered in such a way that the TN was
signal-controlled about 1 km before
Eversburg station into which the Oldenburg
to Osnabrück joined. Transfer has taken
place since 1997 in Osnabrück marshalling
yard, for which both the RVM locos are
equipped with Indusi and vigilance devices. |
