To increase comfort and speed on secondary
lines, in 1932 the Deutsche Reichsbahn
Gesellschaft (DRG) put the first series of 153
lightweight 2-axle carriages into service on
secondary lines. These were the first
fully-welded production coaches and experience
gained here was used for later express
carriages. (An example of the latter is 33 621).
In 1934 Waggonfabrik Steinfurt in Königsberg
built VB 140 216 (later our 98 090) and was
employed as a trailer for a class VT 70
diesel-railcar. From 1949 the coach was
renumbered EBA 177 025 and used as a trailer for
Wittfeld accumulator (battery) railcar ETA
177. From 1965 it served as living- and office
accommodation in Dusiburg-Wedau and, from 1980,
as offices for the S-Bahn at Düsseldorf Hbf. After
this it spent a few years as a stores vehicle.
Financial support from the Nordrhein-Westfalen
Foundation enabled restoration by Eisenbahn-Tradition
for passenger use in Spring 1993. We numbered
the carriage 98 090 somewhat dubiously as its
original (which we would have expected to be
known by DB when we bought the carriage in 1990)
was unclear. Only during restoration have we
been able to reconstruct the history of this
valuable carriage.
